Technique Strength Endurance

and team work!

Welcome

To Brixham Gig rowing club

hello

Welcome to Brixham Gig Club, a community rowing club run by volunteers. Come rain or shine, summer or winter, its gig boats are now a familiar site along the harbour, Breakwater and local beaches. Come along to the Breakwater on 6th\7th July to see the VETS championships and club regatta.

Gig rowing is addictive, not only because it is a true team sport where crews work together, pitting their skills, strength against other boats and the elements but it provides a full-body workout – from your legs to your abs, arms, and back. There are also fantastic benefits to be gained for well being, keeping fit and feeling part of the community, as well as the actual rowing! We have a great social life and look to support local events such as the Pirate Festival and the Torbay Cleaner Coasts initiatives, and also raise money for our chosen charity.

We have a growing membership of all ages from 12 to 75 years old, at all levels of fitness and ability. We run regular introductory sessions, with members then having the opportunity to row as Squad Rowers’ who train hard to compete, or Club Rowers who train to improve technique, keep fit, have fun and enjoy the beautiful coastline from another angle. The objective of the club is to offer a balanced rowing programme for all, but at the same time compete with the best clubs in the South West.

Youth Rower

We have had great success with our girls and boys youth members, supported by experienced coaching and coxing staff. The development of individuals into a harmonised team is a life asset to take away, as well as providing an activity that benefits their health and well being.  Winter rowing takes place over the weekend and summer training after school with selected regattas at the weekend. New members for this age category are particularly welcome and  free ‘taster’s sessions can be arranged.

Club Rower

Club rowers come in all shapes, sizes and ages, and are  encouraged  to train  and improve their technique and fitness. The opportunity to attend and row at regattas is possible if race standards can be met. Rowing in the gigs during the summer is in the evenings with winter rowing taking place over the weekend. Since 2023 the option for a mid week day time row is available. Additional fitness opportunities include: twice weekly winter circuit training, cycling adventures, couch to 5k running program and the use of six Concept (Ergo) rowing machines.

Rowing is a team activity and bonds quickly establish with crews, so there is an active social element throughout the year that all rowers, their friends and family can enjoy.

Our introduction sessions are very popular but because of this we’re unlikely to be offering a novice course until Sept 2024.  If you are happy to wait or if you are a Junior or an adult with experience of gig rowing please go ahead and complete the form in the link below and we’ll be in touch as soon as possible.

The race squads travel all around the South West to regattas to compete against different clubs and includes the renowned World Championships that are held on The Isles of Scilly each May.
