About us

Brixham Gig Rowing Club was established in 2011 and launched its first training boat in 2012, and has gone from strength to strength with the support of the community, its members and valuable fundraising.

We now have 3 training boats and 3 traditional wooden racing boats, Pegasus, Henry Smardon and our latest gig Florence. The gigs are expensive to buy and maintain, but we have been incredibly lucky to be awarded grants from Sport England, National Lotto & Brixham Council.

We are also supported by local businesses including Rockfish, Maritime International, Brixham Trawler Agents, The Lewis Trust and recently benefitted from the Co-op Community Fund.  Without these injections of funds, we could not achieve what we have and are extremely grateful to all our supporters.  Here is the link to our supporters page.

We welcome anyone wishing to support us, please follow our Facebook, website and Instagram pages.

Facilities

Club house, gigs and equipment

Our supporters along with the help of local tradesmen, enabled us to build our club house at the Breakwater Beach where all five gigs are stored along with oars and launching equipment.

The club has also invested in 6 Concept (ergo) rowing machines to allow all members to improve their fitness and technique. Booking of ergo’s  is made using the ‘Teamup’ app. The availability and booking can be made at this link.  During the winter session, circuit training classes are held twice a week for members and non members that wish to participate.

As our membership base continues to grow, we are looking at arranging  day time sessions mid week during the summer season. This would primarily be for club social rowing. Going forward, we will continue to grow the club, become more competitive and are proud to support and raise the profile of Brixham as a thriving community.

Charity

Each year we have a chosen charity

The 2023/2024 chosen charity is Brixham Does Care and we were very pleased to present to them a cheque for £500 earlier this year.   Donations are made at events and by individual club members. In 2021, one of our coxes completed his 365 swim challenge in aid of Muscular Dystrophy UK and we were glad to also support Bob for this challenge.

Social

We Are A Friendly Bunch

We have a great social life and arrange a number of events and activities for members  and non-members throughout the year.  Our cycling group is very popular with moon lit rides a particular favourite. We look to support local events such as the Pirate Festival and the Torbay Cleaner Coasts initiatives. Club events are published on Facebook with WhatsApp groups used to help coordination of rowing and non rowing activities.
